William Cutolo was murdered in a mob hit ordered by Colombo boss Thomas Gioeli on May 26, 1999. Cutolo was an underboss. Alphonse Persico and John DeRoss were both convicted in the killing prior to the prosecution of Thomas “Tommy Shots” Gioeli. They ordered the hit because they believed Cutolo was threatening Persico’s leadership. Hitman Dino Calabro testified Gioeli made a wordless gesture to confirm the hit by placing his hand over his heart and holding up four fingers. |
The body of Cutolo was found in 2008, aiding in the prosecution. Cutolo’s loafers were left on the body. Old school mafia believed it was a sign of respect to remove the dead man's shoes so that when their bodies were found, and there were no shoes. It was a sign of respect. In this case it helped nail Cutolo's killers. |
