A UBC engineering prof says the retaining wall collapse of Amacon was likely caused by improper application of too thin shotcrete and the apparent lack of use of steel wire mesh reinforcement. The 'tie-backs' remained in place while the shotcrete failed. The fill was dry so water intrusion was not a factor. There is no sign of the square, steel mesh that would ordinarily be used. It may have been excluded entirely to cut costs.
