 | Anthony Salvatore Casso was an underboss of the Lucchese crime family. During his career in organized crime, Casso was regarded as a 'homicidal maniac.' He admitted to 36 murders but committed more. In the early 1990s Casso maintained de facto control of the Lucchese family. He ordered eleven mob slayings, and engineered several murder plots against John Gotti with Genovese leader Vincent "the Chin" Gigante. Following his arrest in 1993, Casso became one of the highest-ranking members of the Mafia to turn rat. In 1998 the US government rescinded Casso's plea agreement and dropped him from the witness protection program. Later that year he was sentenced to 455 years in prison. |  |
| Casso was eventually jailed on various charges on January 19, 1993. He finalized a deal at a hearing on March 1, 1994, where he pleaded guilty to 72 counts spelling out a huge litany of Mafia-related crimes, including racketeering, extortion and 15 murders. Casso revealed that two NYPD detectives had been on the Lucchese payroll. Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa committed eight of the eleven murders Casso had ordered. |
