Anthony Capo was a mob turncoat whose testimony helped doom the New Jersey crime family that inspired 'The Sopranos.' He died 8 years ago this month of a heart attack while hiding in witness protection. Capo was a former soldier in the DeCavalcante clan and vomited the pasta at a 2003 murder trial where he described how he whacked mobster John “Johnny Boy” D’Amato for being gay. “Nobody’s going to respect us if we have a gay homosexual boss sitting down discussing La Cosa Nostra business." Capo blasted D’Amato four times in the face in January 1992 as he sat in a car in Brooklyn. Capo sent DeCavalcante family consigliere Stefano Vitabile and capos Philip Abramo and Giuseppe “Pino” Schifilliti to the slammer. |
The D’Amato hit was echoed in a story line in 'The Sopranos' in which 'Vito' is whacked after he’s seen at a gay bar. In the Sopranos, Vito was ambushed by Phil Leotardo and two of his soldiers. |
They duct-taped Vito's mouth shut and beat him to death while Phil Leotardo watched. It was later revealed that Vito was found with a pool cue stuck up his anus, a message that he was killed because of his homosexuality. |
