Frank Lucas was an American drug trafficker who operated in Harlem during the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was known for cutting out middlemen in the drug trade and buying heroin directly from his source in the Golden Triangle. According to Lucas, he built his drug empire by smuggling 98-percent-pure heroin from Vietnam to the U.S. in the coffins of fallen soldiers. |
Authorities seized over $500k in cash when they raided his house in New Jersey in 1975. He was convicted and sentenced to decades in prison, but he turned informant and was released after about five years. | Lucas inspired the 2007 movie "American Gangster." He died May 31 at age 88 in New Jersey. |
