West Point HA Gaston Methot was miffed when his gun permit renewal was denied in 2018. An RCMP firearms officer sent a ‘notice of refusal’ saying he was being denied “because it was not desirable in the interest of public safety". Methot sued the basterds and won, sort of. The judge didn't accept Methot’s suggestion that she simply renew his licence. He had to sway more judges, and that eventually failed. “The applicant is a member of the Hell's Angels Motorcycle Club, which is an organization that allows for violence and criminality, that restricts its member’s cooperation with police, and regards police as adversaries,” the judge said. “Such decisions have been supported across the country. Public safety is paramount and the legislation gives a broad discretion.” |
A biker expert pointed out that Hells Angels rules strictly forbid members from co-operating with police. So if a firearm is ever stolen, an HA member would not report the theft. No word on how Methot attempted to splain that one away. |
