Maltese customs officials seized a record-breaking 800 kg of cocaine valued at $117m on a ship that was en route to the southern Turkish province of Mersin from Colombia. Turkish mafia boss Sedat Peker made headlines last year when he alleged that Turkey had become a hub for cocaine from South America. In June last year, Colombian authorities seized 4.9 tons of cocaine in the seaport city of Buenaventura, destined for Turkey. The drugs seized in that operation were worth $365m. |
