Canadian sentenced to death in China didn't listen to BC Judge

In 2012 Robert Lloyd Schellenberg was being sentenced for drug trafficking in B.C. Justice Neill Brown told Schellenberg that he was lucky to be living in Canada, and to “never underestimate the seriousness of his crime.” He then sentenced him to two years less time served. “Your country deserves much better from you,” Brown said. “You are in one of the best places in the whole world to live." The judge's wisdom was wasted on Schellenberg.

A Chinese court ruled Schellenberg was part of a scheme to smuggle more than 222 kilograms of meth from China to Australia. He was sentenced in 2015 to 15 years in prison, but an appeals court ordered a re-trial and a death penalty was imposed.
